I often say that I am in my third and last career, doing something that I have always wanted to do…be an artist. As a child, I remember my dog patiently lying next to me while I experimented with my first box of pastels. The tactile and sensory attributes that art supplies convey is something I have always loved. My fascination with and passion for art has been a strong thread that has run throughout my entire life.
But then, few lives are a straight line. Initially I chose a career in nursing and have no regrets as I enjoyed the medical profession immensely. While working full time, I began my formal art education at the University of Colorado. When I met my future husband, we left Colorado for New Mexico. Later I transitioned into my second career, co-owner of Santa Fe Seasons, a gourmet food company devoted to high quality and unique southwestern products. Co-owner quickly changed to sole owner when my partner moved out of state. The company became very successful but after 10 years, I decided to sell Santa Fe Seasons and focus on art. I enrolled at the University of New Mexico, and, having many credits from previous classes as well as an ongoing love for art history, I graduated with two degrees: art studio and art history.
I really appreciate all of the art disciplines and if there were enough time would love to practice them all. My primary interest is a continuation of working with encaustics that I began at school. I prefer a non-representational style, relatively minimal, but definitely showing the presence of the hand. These free and intuitive works are balanced by the exactness of my representational drawings, flag paintings and precise book arts.
